Pioneer Saloon

Episode #18 of the Nevada Magazine radio show features an interview with Noel Sheckells, owner of the historic Pioneer Saloon in Goodsprings, located about 40 miles southwest of Las Vegas (skip ahead to 14:00 to hear the interview with Sheckells).

The Pioneer Saloon is celebrating its centennial year throughout 2013 via a number of signature events. "Our grand finale with a drum roll is on October 19," Sheckells says. "We're unveiling a historical marker sign that is going to be magnificent. People have donated money in increments of $25 to have their name on this sign." There will be about 1,500 names on the sign, according to Sheckells, who says that about 1,300 names have been secured. Call 702-874-9362 ASAP if you're interested in donating.

Nevada Museum of Art

Episode #16 of the Nevada Magazine radio show features an interview with Rachel Milon, director of communications and marketing at the Nevada Museum of Art in Reno. The historic museum celebrated its 80th anniversary in 2011.

Milon talks about the many exhibits and events at NMA, including the new "A Real Van Gogh?" exhibit centered on the 1888 painting known as Study by Candlelight. Although it was acquired in 1948 from a reputable art dealer and deemed genuine by a prominent Van Gogh expert at the time, debate about the painting’s authenticity has ignited an art world controversy.

Milon also discusses the Voces y Visiones exhibit — highlights from the Collection of El Museo del Barrio in New York — and how listeners can get free passes (while supplies last) to the Nevada Museum of Art.

Prospecting in Nevada

Episode #15 of the Nevada Magazine radio show features an interview with Larry Robbins, president of the Northern Nevada Chapter of the Gold Prospectors Association of America. The show is complementary to a story by freelancer Richard Massey in Nevada Magazine's March/April 2013 issue titled "Prospecting in Nevada." The issue is on newsstands until May 1.

Robbins taks about how Nevadans can get involved in and join the GPAA prospecting group, including info about a Rye Patch Nugget Shoot (metal detector hunt) event that will be held Saturday, September 28 at Rye Patch State Recreation Area northeast of Lovelock.

The GPAA of Northern Nevada meets the fourth Monday of every month from 6 to 8 p.m. at the Spanish Springs Library in Sparks. "Any person who wishes to get out and have a good time looking for gold in the wilds of Nevada can come," Robbins says. "There are no dues, no fees, and we survive on the general goodwill of our members and sponsors."
