Wells & the American Discovery Trail

Episode #23 of the Nevada Magazine radio show features respective interviews with Matt Holford, president of the Wells Chamber of Commerce, and Ted Oxborrow, State Coordinator for the Nevada portion of the American Discovery Trail.

In the first half-hour, Holford talks about all the great things the historic Northern Nevada town of Wells has to offer. "Great hunting. Great fishing. Recreation's the mainstay," Holford says. He goes on to discuss the town's many upcoming events, such as the Nevada State Fiddle Contest (June 14-15), Wells Fun Run Car Show and Shine (July 26-28), and Race to the Angel (September 7), as in nearby Angel Lake. In the show's second half-hour, Oxborrow covers the Nevada portion of the ADT, nearly 500 miles of rugged, yet beautiful, country through the heart of the Silver State. "The most exciting state of the 14 states it goes through is Nevada," Oxborrow says. For more details on the Nevada route, go here. Oxborrow also discusses the Nevada Discovery Ride, happening right now, in which Reno woman Samantha Szesciorka is riding on horseback across Nevada on the ADT to raise awareness of wild-horse adoption.

Nevada Tourism & Mesquite

Episode #22 of the Nevada Magazine radio show features an interview with Claudia Vecchio, director of the recently created Nevada Department of Tourism & Cultural Affairs. Vecchio discusses what's new in Nevada tourism, specifically the new statewide brand, "A World Within. A State Apart." She worked in Texas and Ohio tourism prior to her current stint in the Silver State.

The Nevada Commission on Tourism will be holding its second "Discover Your Nevada" campaign soon. You can read about the 2012 Nevada "treasures" in this article from the July/August 2012 issue of Nevada Magazine. Vecchio also talks about the new Indian Territory exhibit located at the Reno-Tahoe International Airport.

In the show's second half-hour, Vicky Walter, president/CEO of the Mesquite Chamber of Commerce, talks about tourism in the southeastern Nevada city of Mesquite.

arte italia

Episode #21 of the Nevada Magazine radio show features an interview with Kristen Avansino, executive director and president of arte italia in Reno. "We set out, in 2008, to create a forever bricks-and-mortar testimony to not only the culinary traditions of Italy, but also outstanding artistic representations," Avansino says.

The impetus for the interview is this "A Taste of Tuscany" story, from Nevada Magazine's May/June 2013 issue. The cultural center has hosted 19 Italian chefs to date in its culinary arts classes.

Avansino also talks about the history of this refurbished 1914 Reno mansion located at 442 Flint Street in the "Cal Ave District." Visitors also have the chance to see current art exhibits.

HawkWatch & Spring Wings

Episode #20 of the Nevada Magazine radio show is "for the birds." It features respective interviews with Joseph Dane, Development & Marketing Director for HawkWatch International, and Susan Sawyer, Visitor Services Manager at Stillwater National Wildlife Refuge.

In the first half-hour, Dane discusses the raptor research site located in Nevada's Goshute Mountains along the Intermountain Flyway. One of the longest-running standardized migration-monitoring efforts in the West, this project runs from August 15 through November 5 each year. It's also the cover story in Nevada Magazine's May/June 2013 issue.

In the show's second half-hour, Sawyer discusses in depth the Spring Wings Bird Festival, which is May 17-19 and based in Fallon. The annual festival — a celebration of shorebird and waterfowl migration through the Lahontan Valley of north-central Nevada — draws birders to and around the City of Fallon, as they participate in such events as Meander the Marsh and Owl Prowl.

Pyramid Lake & Sparks Heritage Museum

Episode #19 of the Nevada Magazine radio show features respective interviews with Scott Carey, Tribal Planner for the Pyramid Lake Paiute Tribe, and Anthea Humphreys, Executive Director at Sparks Heritage Museum. Carey (above, right) appears on the show to promote tourism at Pyramid Lake Indian Reservation. "We just a had a wonderful fishing season — really a historic fishing season," says Carey, who also serves on the Sparks Heritage Museum board and has a vast knowledge of the City of Sparks' railroad history. He occasionally hosts historic walking tours. Later in the show, he discusses Pyramid Lake's inaugural Bird Day, held on May 4.

"The Sparks Heritage Museum is probably the best-kept secret in Nevada," Humphreys (above, left) says. The 28-year-old museum recently unveiled an upstairs cultural center, which is a restored library building. The museum is currently hosting its first art exhibit, Wally’s World: The Loneliest Art Collection in Nevada, on display through June 14. The installment features 35 paintings and sculptures from longtime Nevadan Wally Cuchine's personal collection. Downstairs in the museum is a Native American exhibit, among others.
