2013 Photo Contest

Episode #35 of the Nevada Magazine radio show features respective interviews with Neil Lockhart (above left), the grand prize winner of Nevada Magazine's 2013 photo contest, and Kristoffer Pfalmer (above right), grand prize winner of the 2012 photo contest and an Honorable Mention winner in this year's contest. Both are Reno photographers.

In the beginning of the show, Lockhart explains how he captured his winning image "Light Glyphs," which was taken in Lagomarsino Canyon, one of the state’s most intriguing collections of petroglyphs located in the Lousetown area north of Virginia City. He also shares his favorite places in Nevada to photograph.

To start the second segment, fourth-place winner Michael Lindberg — another Reno photographer — calls in to discuss his outstanding image of iconic Sand Mountain. Lindberg is also an avid fisherman who prefers the Nevada side of the Truckee River.

Pfalmer explains how his job with the Nevada Air National Guard allows him to get perspectives on the Silver State that not many get to see. He also shares where he loves to photograph in the state. What started as a casual hobby for Pfalmer has grown into a unique skill. His photography is displayed at Reno business 1864 Tavern. The tavern's co-owner, Kevin Walen, also calls in during the show.

Gilcrease Nature Sanctuary & Nevada Discovery Ride

Episode #34 of the Nevada Magazine radio show features respective interviews with Taylor Andrews, Executive Director of Gilcrease Nature Sanctuary, and Samantha Szesciorka, who recently trekked across Nevada on horseback in what she dubbed the Nevada Discovery Ride.

In the first half-hour, Andrews discusses the Gilcrease Nature Sanctuary, located in Las Vegas and home to nearly 400 birds. The sanctuary’s focus is of the avian variety, so you will see and hear several different and unique species of birds, among them emus and ostriches. For those who want to see larger species of animals, there are more than 40 different varieties including llamas, goats, donkeys, and tortoises. In the second half-hour, Szesciorka joins us in studio with her soon-to-be-husband Ryan Powell (both pictured above) to talk about her nearly 500-mile adventure across the Silver State to promote wild-horse adoption. Szesciorka is also Assistant Curator at Reno's Wilbur D. May Center, which she touches on during the interview. Virginia City & The Discovery Museum

Episode #33 of the Nevada Magazine radio show features respective interviews with Patrick Gilmore, Tourism & Marketing Manager for the Virginia City Tourism Commission, and Patrick Turner, Marketing Manager for the Terry Lee Wells Nevada Discovery Museum in Reno.

In the first half-hour, Gilmore briefs listeners on the illustrious history of Virginia City, which dates to 1859. He talks about how Virginia City — despite what some people might think — is indeed a year-round attraction. There are also numerous popular events coming up, such as the Labor Day weekend Civil War celebration, September's International Camel Races, and October's World Championship Outhouse Races. At the end of the show, Gilmore mentions two new Virginia City restaurants.

In the second half-hour, Turner covers all the great family activities at The Discovery (for short). Birthday parties include free museum admission for all guests. Quarterly "Discovery After Dark" events are tailored to seventh, eighth, and ninth graders. The museum also features a gift shop that contains books and other school supplies. Hump Day at The Discovery on September 4 will include camels and ostriches from the Virginia City Camel Races.

Nevada 150

Episode #32 of the Nevada Magazine radio show features respective interviews with Peter Barton, administrator for the Division of Museums & History, and Scott Carey, Events & Community Relations Manager for Nevada 150.

In the first half-hour, Barton gives a detailed overview of Nevada 150 and its plans to celebrate Nevada's sesquicentennial. In doing so, he emphasizes the seven state museums' plans to participate in the state's 150th birthday.

In the second half-hour, Carey covers the wide range of Nevada 150's plans for the next year-plus, including the many signature events that are in the works.

Belmont Courthouse & The Nature Conservancy

Episode #31 of the Nevada Magazine radio show features respective interviews with Donna Motis, president of Friends of the Belmont Courthouse, and Duane Petite, Carson River Project Director for The Nature Conservancy in Nevada.

In the first half-hour, Motis gives a detailed overview of the history of the Belmont Courthouse, located in the living ghost town of Belmont in central Nevada. A tour of the historic property is well worth it. Inside, graffiti dating to the 1890s make the building truly unique among Nevada attractions. Currently, the Friends of the Belmont Courthouse are working to restore the iconic building. Read more about their mission in our July/August 2013 issue.

In the second half-hour, Petite provides an extensive overview of The Nature Conservancy projects in Nevada, such as River Fork Ranch (Carson River), Bently-Kirman Tract (Carson River), and McCarran Ranch (Truckee River).
