Carson City & The Lost City Museum

Episode #26 of the Nevada Magazine radio show features respective interviews with Joel Dunn, executive director of the Carson City Conventions and Visitors Bureau, and Dena Sedar, director of The Lost City Museum in Overton.

In the first half-hour, Dunn discusses all the things that make Nevada's capital city, Carson City, great. That of course includes events, such as June's Legends of the West Bike & Car Fest and the Garden & Historic House Tour. He also provides an update on the Virginia & Truckee Railroad attraction, including the Toast of the Canyon, kids-free Fridays, and the holiday Polar Express ride. Dunn also discusses how the Carson City CVB is utilizing New Deal Coupons, the historic Kit Carson Trail walking tour, and more.

In the second half-hour, Sedar begins by discussing one of Nevada's more intriguing ghost towns, St. Thomas, which was flooded due to the creation of Hoover Dam in the 1930s. She goes on to explain the relevance of Southern Nevada's Lost City Museum, one of seven state museums. Excerpts from Sedar's book, Nevada’s Lost City, appeared in the September/October 2012 edition of Nevada Magazine (read the story here). An excerpt from the book reads: Many people think that the Ancestral Puebloans were only found in the Four Corners region, but the Lost City is archaeological proof that they lived and thrived in Southern Nevada.

Carson Valley & Artown

Episode #24 of the Nevada Magazine radio show features respective interviews with AJ Frels, executive director of the Carson Valley Visitors Authority, and Artown executive director Beth Macmillan.

In the first half-hour, Frels discusses all the things that make Carson Valley — nestled in the foothills of the eastern Sierra Nevada — great. The valley includes the communities of Gardnerville, Genoa, Minden, and Topaz Lake. Frels expands on the great golf in the area and the increasing popularity of soaring (glider rides), which takes passengers 10,000 feet in the air. "You talk about seeing the different variety of blues of Lake Tahoe," Frels says.

In the second half-hour, Macmillan explains the annual, month-long celebration of art that occurs in Reno. "It's the 18th season," she says. "I feel like we're growing up, but I feel like we're established at the same time." Macmillan has been the executive director since 2003. This year's Artown will feature more than 500 events. "There is something for everyone, and it's every discipline of the arts," Macmillan adds.
