Carson Valley & Artown

Episode #24 of the Nevada Magazine radio show features respective interviews with AJ Frels, executive director of the Carson Valley Visitors Authority, and Artown executive director Beth Macmillan.

In the first half-hour, Frels discusses all the things that make Carson Valley — nestled in the foothills of the eastern Sierra Nevada — great. The valley includes the communities of Gardnerville, Genoa, Minden, and Topaz Lake. Frels expands on the great golf in the area and the increasing popularity of soaring (glider rides), which takes passengers 10,000 feet in the air. "You talk about seeing the different variety of blues of Lake Tahoe," Frels says.

In the second half-hour, Macmillan explains the annual, month-long celebration of art that occurs in Reno. "It's the 18th season," she says. "I feel like we're growing up, but I feel like we're established at the same time." Macmillan has been the executive director since 2003. This year's Artown will feature more than 500 events. "There is something for everyone, and it's every discipline of the arts," Macmillan adds.
