Gilcrease Nature Sanctuary & Nevada Discovery Ride

Episode #34 of the Nevada Magazine radio show features respective interviews with Taylor Andrews, Executive Director of Gilcrease Nature Sanctuary, and Samantha Szesciorka, who recently trekked across Nevada on horseback in what she dubbed the Nevada Discovery Ride.

In the first half-hour, Andrews discusses the Gilcrease Nature Sanctuary, located in Las Vegas and home to nearly 400 birds. The sanctuary’s focus is of the avian variety, so you will see and hear several different and unique species of birds, among them emus and ostriches. For those who want to see larger species of animals, there are more than 40 different varieties including llamas, goats, donkeys, and tortoises. Read more about the sanctuary, and other Nevada wildlife sanctuaries, in this story from Nevada Magazine's July/August 2013 issue.

In the second half-hour, Szesciorka joins us in studio with her soon-to-be-husband Ryan Powell (both pictured above) to talk about her nearly 500-mile adventure across the Silver State to promote wild-horse adoption. Szesciorka is also Assistant Curator at Reno's Wilbur D. May Center, which she touches on during the interview. You can read more about the Nevada Discovery Ride, which took place in May and June of this year, in Nevada Magazine's September/October 2013 issue.
